— July 28: Weed or Wildflower? 9-10:30 a.m. at the Native Plant Garden. Team up with the Friends of New Germany State Park and native plant enthusiasts to help remove unwanted plants from our native plant garden. As you work, you will learn how to identify common weeds and why protecting native plants is so critical for wildlife. Please come prepared with your own work gloves, knee pads, tick spray, sunscreen, and water.
— July 30: Homemade Fire Starters, 7-8 p.m. at the outdoor amphitheater (near the Lake House). Join Ranger Noah for this hands-on demonstration and learn some unconventional ways to make homemade fire starters and how to use them. This program will take place inside the Lake House if it rains.
— July 31: Tree Tales, 4-5 p.m. at the Lake House. Join Ranger Noah on this easy walk and learn how to find hints and clues about each tree’s unique life story.
July 29: Swallow Falls Canyon Walk, 10:30-11:30 a.m. (Swallow Falls). Join the Park Naturalist for a walk down the Canyon Trail. We will discover the rich flora and learn about the history of this magnificent trail. There are some areas where caution is needed, but mostly it is easy walking. (Meet at the Swallow Falls Camp Store.)
July 29: Snorkeling 101, Noon (Herrington Manor). Ranger Jeremy will take you on a lake adventure, exploring the flora and creatures in our 53-acre lake. We can outfit only 10 people (over 16 years of age) so register as soon as possible. (Registration is available at the Herrington Manor Office.
July 29: Vagabonds at Swallow Falls, 1-2:30 p.m. (Swallow Falls). Join our Naturalist as he takes you on a journey through the past. Henry Ford, Thomas Edison, and others created a yearly event called car camping. They traveled to Swallow Falls in 1918 and again in 1921. See and hear how they brought this beautiful area to the public’s attention. (Meet at the Swallow Falls Camp Store)
July 30: Orienteering 101, 1:30-2:30 p.m. (Herrington Manor). Are you lost? Learn ways to navigate using a compass and map. Program is geared toward beginners and will be conducted on our Orienteering Course. (Meet at Herrington Manor Office)
July 30: Nature Walk, 3:30-4:30 p.m. (Herrington Manor). Join the Naturalist for a short hike (1 mile or less) as we examine what flowers are blooming, what those trees are, ferns, birds, all that stuff. (Meet at Herrington Manor Office)
July 30: Campfire Program, 7-9 p.m. (Herrington Manor). Join the Naturalist for some yummy s’mores. He will bring his guitar for a sing-along, featuring your favorite kids’ songs “Found a Peanut, Just Now,” and others. This program will be canceled if there are thunderstorms in the region. (Meet at Herrington Manor Campfire Ring)
July 31: Little Naturalists Story Time, 9-10 a.m. (Herrington Manor). Bring the little ones for a story with our Naturalist. Today, among other stories, we will examine “Sponge NatureBob”. Program is geared for ages 7 and under, but all ages are welcome.
July 31: Feeding Time! 2:30 p.m. (Herrington Manor). Stop by the Nature Center below the park office for our snake’s favorite time of the week: Feeding time! Rain or shine. (Meet at Herrington Manor Nature Center)
Aug. 3: Gentle/Beginner Yoga, 5:30 p.m. every Wednesday (Herrington Manor). Spread out and enjoy the beautiful outdoors for an hour of gentle/beginning yoga with Sheri Kosh, RYT 500. This is a great class if you are new to yoga or want a slower, gentler practice. Students bring their own mat or towel. Wear loose clothing. Extra props are not required for this class. Register at https://www.schedulicity.com/scheduling/BTP8KU/ classes. Registration required. Please arrive 15 minutes early to sign in. Aug. 4: Songbird Searchers, 9-10:30 a.m. (Herrington Manor). Take a walk through the special habitat on a Herrington Manor trail to listen and look for some of the beautiful species that call this forest home. (Meet at Herrington Manor Park Office)
