Combined Shape

It's easy to see why Omar and Oz's main bathroom was a hit with the judges. The room nails both contemporary and country style in subtle ways that would appeal to many buyers.

Shaynna Blaze, Darren Palmer and Neale Whitaker loved the space so much they gave it the highest scores, and Omar and Oz were the first team to win a Room Reveal in 2022.

There is a lot to love about the bathroom, but these are the top five features:

Normally when you see VJ panels they are either on the bottom half of the walls or cover the whole space. Omar and Oz flipped the conventional approach for their bathroom by putting VJ panels on the top half of two of the walls.

The rest of the walls featured a white gloss tile installed in a herringbone pattern. By combining the handmade-look tiles with the VJ panelling, Omar and Oz were able to inject plenty of country style in a warm and inviting way.

"What's blowing me away is these are all elements that kind of shouldn't work together but they do," Neale said.

Going with a mostly white or neutral palette can so easily end up bland, boring or cold, but not in Omar and Oz's bathroom.

The friends were strategic with their use of white by contrasting the glossy tile with the crisp white VJ panels. They then added a black patterned tile on the floor to add interest and a connection to the black vanity.

The bath, basins and toilet were all a matte white colour to tie-in with the VJ panels.

As for interest and glamour, the tapware, towel rails and drawer handles were all in brushed gold.

"This is all neutrals, all textures, traditional, contemporary – this is that palette done exactly how it should be done," Shaynna said.

Before viewing Omar and Oz's bathroom the judges had been to four other bathrooms that hadn't quite got the scale quite right.

Rachel and Ryan's bathroom, for example, was massive and had double showers far apart from each other, while Dylan and Jenny had a huge room and a tiny shower.

Omar and Oz got the shower just right for the size of the room. It was big enough to feel luxurious while not taking away precious space from the rest of the bathroom.

Even with a good-sized shower Omar and Oz were able to have a large bath and enough floor space to fit multiple people for that busy last-minute toothbrushing hussle.

And the toilet is neatly hidden behind the door when you enter, so you walk in to a space that feels fresh and elegant.

There's no point having a beautiful bathroom if it's annoying to use, but Omar and Oz seem to have thought of everything with this space.

That's especially true when it comes to the lighting. There are Velux skylights to provide plenty of natural light, along with well thought out lighting in the room to make sure you can see yourself well enough to do your skincare routine.

Speaking of skincare products, Omar and Oz have chosen a large vanity with four drawers and a center cupboard. There'll be enough space for all the members of the family to have their own drawers.

In addition to the vanity storage, the mirrors are shaving cabinets so frequently used items can be stored there in easy reach.

To top it off Omar and Oz made sure the bathroom had heating so its comfortable to use in a cold Gisborne winter.

Styling is what helps a space tell a story to a buyer and the story Omar and Oz are telling is one people will be captivated by.

The men kept it simple and elegant and in the same colour palette as the rest of the room. They didn't clutter the space, but added just enough to show how it would and could be used.

There were two wooden stools, one a more traditional shape and the other a more rustic piece, that gave the room an added layer of country style.

One stool had a large pothos plant for a touch of nature indoors, while the other was styled with bath salts, a candle and a body brush.

Omar and Oz chose towels in warm neutral colours and hung them where you'd expect to see them in a bathroom – including tossed casually over the edge of the bath.
